Architectural shingles

Architectural shingles that are actually built for the Gulf Coast

Most roofs in Mobile are shingle roofs, and most of them were put on with the cheapest shingle that met code and a staple gun. The difference between that roof and one that comes through a hurricane is the shingle's wind class, the nailing, the edges and the deck underneath.

An architectural (dimensional, laminated) shingle is two layers of fiberglass mat bonded together, which makes it heavier, thicker and better-looking than the flat three-tab shingle on most of the 1980s and 1990s roofs in west Mobile and Tillmans Corner. The weight and the stronger sealant strip are what matter here. For this coast we install shingles rated ASTM D7158 Class H, the 150-mph rating that the IBHS FORTIFIED standard requires (ASTM D3161 Class F is the alternative), with algae-resistant copper granules, because the black streaking of Gloeocapsa magma on a north slope is a Mobile constant in 66 inches of rain a year and shortens the life of an ordinary shingle. The lines we trust come from the two or three manufacturers whose Gulf Coast track record we've seen on tear-offs, and we'll show you the choices rather than reading a brochure.

The shingle is only the top of the system. What keeps it on in a hurricane is underneath and around it: a deck re-nailed with ring-shank nails and sealed at the seams, synthetic underlayment, ice-and-water membrane in the valleys and around every pipe and chimney, a wide drip edge with a fully adhered starter strip so wind can't get under the first course, six nails per shingle in the manufacturer's high-wind pattern, placed on the nail line and not above it, and wind-rated ridge vents and caps. Hurricane Sally gusted to 81 mph at Mobile Regional and 97 at Dauphin Island; the roofs that lost shingles in those winds mostly lost them at the eaves and the ridge, where a staple, a high nail or a loose starter had already let go. We build every shingle roof to the FORTIFIED standard whether or not you pursue the designation, because the extra cost is small and the difference in a storm is not. See FORTIFIED roof and the grant.

Two honest notes. A shingle roof here lasts 18 to 25 years, not the 30 or 50 on the wrapper; heat, humidity, UV and algae see to that, and ventilation (or the lack of it) decides which end of that range you get. And a shingle roof is the right call for most Mobile houses: a Class H architectural roof built FORTIFIED costs well under half of standing seam, earns the same insurance discount with the designation, and qualifies for the same $10,000 Strengthen Alabama Homes grant. Class H wind-rated shingles

ASTM D7158 Class H, the rating FORTIFIED requires, with algae-resistant granules for Mobile's north slopes.

Sealed, re-nailed deck

Ring-shank nails and taped seams under the underlayment, to the IBHS standard.

Adhered starter and wide drip edge

The first course glued down and the edge metal sized for uplift, where hurricane wind tests a roof first.

Questions we get about architectural shingles

Which shingle brand is best in Mobile?

The brand matters less than the rating and the install. We use Class H, algae-resistant architectural shingles from two or three manufacturers with a long Gulf Coast record and show you the options; the nailing, the sealed deck and the adhered starter are what keep any of them on.

How long will a shingle roof last here?

Plan on 18 to 25 years. Heat, humidity, UV and algae are harder on shingles than almost anywhere in the country, and a well-vented attic is the difference between the low end and the high end.

Are three-tab shingles cheaper?

A little, and not worth it. Three-tabs are lighter, lower-rated for wind, and most lines are being discontinued. An architectural Class H shingle costs a few hundred dollars more on a typical house.

What about the black streaks?

Algae. It feeds on the limestone in the shingle and spreads where the slope stays damp. Algae-resistant shingles have copper granules that stop it; on an existing roof a soft wash removes it without stripping granules.

Do you nail or staple?

Nail, six per shingle, on the nail line. Staples and high nails are the reason so many Mobile roofs lost courses in Sally, and they void the wind warranty.

Can a shingle roof be FORTIFIED?

Yes, and most FORTIFIED roofs in Mobile and Baldwin counties are shingle. Class H shingles over a sealed, re-nailed deck with an adhered starter and wind-rated vents, verified by the evaluator, earns the designation and the discount.
